Dohyo Download 0116: I Have to Send Some Flowers to Myself

Genbu is joined by Kamahiko, Asabariki, Tamanosato, Enkaga, Shitayama, and briefly by Midorisetchi to discuss the RTY basho finale, the Champ/Chump Season 3 finale standings, who will end up where come next basho, we look over the all time win/loss leaderboards to see where old versions of us ranked compared to the current crop of everyone, Rosu Shield tracking gets talked about, and we have an elongated discussion about Ichinojo claiming he was in John Wick Chapter 4. We can find no evidence he was but come and listen in!

Dohyo Download 0115: Under the Blanket

Genbu (COVID infected but almost out of it) returns to join Kamahiko, Kaitetsu, Tamanosato, Kunousagi, and Enkaga for a round up of random sumo news! New stables, new prospects, and apparently some new phrases as Tamanosato utters the title of this podcast. We talk about the Champ/Chump series as we live update the spreadsheet and learn that the loser of the group isn’t who we initially think the loser of the group is (spoiler alert, it’s NOT Enkaga). Dohyo Download 0113: I Don’t Like Onosato, I Think

Kaitetsu, Kamahiko, Tamanosato, Asabariki, Shitayama, Kamamidori, and Genbu break down day 1 of the May Tournament in IRL basho talk as we discuss Makuuchi, the san’yaku, some Juryo goings on, a little Makushita, what our feelings on the performances were, punchable faces, Tamanosato’s strange dislike of cheese, Kagayaki’s current status, the various states of the Waka brothers, and a whole lot more. There is even a bit of a stunning bit of news by Genbu as the show was wrapping up that should excite and entertain (as the other hosts definitely almost wet themselves with excitement at hearing it)… that starts at 1:09.43, if you skip our lovely banter. Shame.

Dohyo Download 0112: He’s Going to Take It Whole

Kamahiko, Kaitetsu, Asabariki, Terukaze, Tamanosato, and the gloriously bald Genbu decided it’s time to hold the S3 Champ/Chump draft (since no one contacted me about the non-live draft possibility this time)… Enkaga comes in late and chooses his rookie season options at the very end, too. The gang talks about both Banzukes (IRL and RTY), with Genbu doing a “pronounce the banzuke” to the delight of Kamahiko! The group also talks about who is where IRL and what the upcoming basho looks like with how everyone is situated. We almost have a consensus this time who will take the Yusho! Almost.

Dohyo Download 0111: Akamidori

No Kaitetsu or Tamanosato as they travel on their extravagant yacht to glorious places like Malta, Venice, and Bermuda playing soccer/football on their full sized pitch. Yes, a yacht with a full sized pitch. In the meantime, Asabariki and Kamahiko take the lead on interviewing former Ozeki Akamidori about their career, their heya, Kumamidori’s future, and some stories of their times. Genbu and Chubanoumi do pass in and out a bit (Genbu isn’t 100% again, he’s old and that’s life) as Shitayama sits on and listens. It is a grand old time!

Dohyo Download 0110: Jinx-kozuna

Guess the Banzuke talk! Kirigaya Oyakata interview talk! Kagayaki sucks! Genbu, Kaitetsu, Enkaga, Tamanosato, Kamahiko, Asabariki, and Kirigaya Oyakata (Kumamidori) gather together around the old podcast campfire to spin tales about Akamidori’s glory days, Enkaga trying to do the Guess the Banzuke (and gets ridiculed for it), Asabariki’s impending promotion to Yokozuna (to his surprise), the mysterious YDC of RTY, our final results from the Champ/Chump season 2, and a little bit of a change as Genbu is sitting in his living room instead of his podcast studio trying to let his wife sleep in (but she’s awake just as the show starts).

Dohyo Download 0109: That’s a Bit of an Over-Promotion

When you start the show with two false starts, things don’t look so good… that turned out to be fine, though, as Genbu was joined by Enkaga, Tamanosato, Kamahiko, Asabariki, and late in the show Ex-Akamidori (Kirigaya Oyakata) to discuss the state of RTY’s current basho, the updated Champ/Chump standings, the RTY banzuke (including speculation on who’s going up, down, and winning each division or going into playoffs), Genbu and Tamanosato accept the Golden Poop Award for this basho, and then Kirigaya Oyakata takes us on a magical journey of storytelling with a short jaunt down Akamidori’s triumphs and tribulations before the time is up… but we’ll head down that path again next week!

Dohyo Download 0108: A Battle For Juryo Yusho… Next Basho

Genbu, Enkaga, Tamanosato, Kamahiko, Kaitetsu, and Asabariki get together with lurkers Toryuken, Kaikaryu, and Shitayama, with a surprise visit from Terukaze to pick a new Champ with Tetsuwan’s intai for the Champ/Chump series… we have some live bouts (not as chaotic as last time), we talk about the Champ/Chump standings, Easter weekend is upon us, battling bots is easier for some of us, Genbu’s learned exactly how much walking at work he can do, who will be battling to go back to Juryo to fight for the Yusho there next basho (hint: it sounds like a lot of the hosts will be there), how is the current RTY basho going, and we have our usual tangent fest of fun.
